Is It O.k. To Have This Bgk In This Tank (black Ghost Knife Fish)?

I really love the BGK and my dad had 2 when i was young in a community tank and aggressive to semi-aggressive tank, and both did well. (it was a 55 u.s. gal) I plan on buying a not-so-much ‘baby’ BGK, but more so smaller one (small for now at least, as i know they can get large) that the private owned strict (Strict as in intense care extremely well-maintained tanks, setups, etc.) fish store i go to is selling. I was just wondering if for its size now it would be OK to have it in a well maintained 40 gal. until he grows excessively? (after that its to the 55 for him. still needs to be set up but there’s still much time before that comes into play) I know all their needs, care, etc.But was also wondering if while being well fed on a regular basis in the 40 gal and being a timid-to-other fish even in a larger 40 gal with a lot of room; would be alright to have 1 dojo loach, 1 clown loach, 1 med-small, yet hold-her-ground angel, 1 shark cat, 1 khuli that hides under lava rock all day, 2 giant danio’s, 2 Buenos Aires tetra, and 1 poor neon. (The shark ate the other 2). Yes most likely all you fish hobbyist are saying this is over stocked, but if you saw it you would even say it still is very open in there. And yes also there are caves, and a clear “Ghost Viewing” tube ready. ( the tube that is, the caves are beautifully placed hiding areas that appear as natural can be. Just please no put downs or hating, if you really saw it you would understand. I just need to know if the tank is substantial enough for a while until his growth really picks up. And also if the mixture of fish would be alright. I know a lot of successful aquarium hobbyists (including my dad) who have had these fish with BGK in similar conditions and had no problems, but then some who would whip you if you even asked if a BGK would be alright with a assorted species of ‘community/assort. tropicals’. Oh yea and it is nicely and moderately planted for the BGK. Not to little, not to much.

Emergency Fish Bio-wheel Filter Broken?

I was sitting next to my tank watching my green spotted puffer, Puffles, swim around and all of a sudden it got really quiet. Apparently my filter just died. I took it off, cleaned it out, let it cool down and plugged it back in and nope, its dead.
I think its cause I recently switched from gravel to live sand substrate. It was an over the side bio-wheel design.
Should I get another one, or should I get a canister style? This filter was only 2 years old at the most.
When I put the substrate in, I dumped it in slowly, with the filter off, but after it settles enough to see about an inch I turned the filter on. Did it die due to this? Or are bio-wheels not compatible with substrate? I’ve been keeping fish for over 20 years, but this is the first time I have used any type of substrate like this.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I just am afraid to go buy a Bio-Wheel if this will happen again. I’m also not keen on getting a canister filtration system that is very costly if I don’t need it.
Tank is a 20 gallon brackish tank of 1 salinity and has a solitary 1 inch green spotted puffer fish.

Ideas for 20 gallon long?

Question by ksilver: Ideas for 20 gallon long?
I’m currently cycling a tank for the lobby at my work (I work at an accounting firm). It was sold to me as a 30 gallon, but I measured it and it turned out to be a 20 gallon long. It’ll do, though.

I have 10 neon tetras in my quarantine tank. I bought them for a tank that didn’t happen. I plan on putting them in the 20 long, and a pair of gold rams that I saw at my LFS that I really liked.

Any suggestions as to what else I could put in the tank? My instinct says “corydoras,” but my tank will have artificial gravel, with rocks that are all about a quarter inch in diameter. I don’t think that corydoras will like living in a tank with fake rocks like that.

So far I only have the neon tetras. Any ideas?
I’m looking at pygmy cories, harlequin rasboras, threadfin rainbows, or dwarf pencilfish. The cories might not be very happy with the substrate, but other than that, I can’t decide.

Your instinct is spot on. Corydoras prefer very small, natural gravel, or even better sand. Along with your Neons and Gold Rams, you might consider some (3 or more,) Pygmy Corys. These little fish are so very cute, but are more mid-level swimmers, although they do rest quite a bit on the bottom.
Some other good 20-gallon compatible fish include:
Any of the Dwarf Gouramis,
Pygmy Hatchetfish, (6 or more.)
One Betta. (But not with Gouramis.)
Rasboras.
Danios. (Blue Danios are neat!)

Remember to add your fish slowly, and don’t overstock!

Good luck.

What’s A Good Fish To Start With?

I have had an aversion to fish for most of my life and I’m fairly certain it’s a psychological thing, since I got very sick after eating some years and years ago. I do eat crab and on rare occasions shrimp, and weirdly I really like tuna from a can… only packed in water of course.
Anyway, I hear more and more about the health benefits of fish, especially salmon, so I’d eventually like to work my way up to that. But for now, can anyone recommend a not-very-fishy fish and/or recipe that I could start out with?
**I already know raw fish, sardines and anchovies are out of the question!

Fish Compatibility Fresh Water Aquarium?

I have two Opal Gouramis, four Zebra Danios, four Neon Tetras, two Red Finned Tetras, one Yoyo, one Pictus Catfish, three Ghost/Glass Catfish, one Sailfin Pleco, and one Spotted Pleco.
I have a 33 gallon tank at the moment, and I keep the temperature at 78/79 degrees.
How hard/soft should my water be? What about PH levels? In the long run will there be any territory issues regarding them?
I am also aware I should increase my tank size in future for size and movement of my fish.
I am also going to get Red Line Torpedo Barbs once I increase in size, will that effect the hard/softness and PH levels required to sustain a good tank?
