For the past 3 weeks I have been feeling really sick and tired. My symptoms are severe fatigue (I can’t even wash my hair without feeling exhausted), muscle weakness, headaches, muscle aches, nausea especially after eating and changed bowel movements (yuk I know but I want to the thorough). About 3 weeks ago, when I first started feeling sick, the glands of the side of my neck swelled up really big and hurt like crazy. My neck was sore for days.
After a week of feeling sick I finally went to the doctor. She ordered blood tests and said It sounded like I had glandular fever.
I finally got the test results back today and she said that I have the antibodies in my system to show I have had glandular fever in the past but she can’t tell when. It could have been recently or it could have been years ago. She also said that my vitamin D levels are low. They are at 31 when they should be at least 50, and that could be causing my fatigue.
She has started me on a course of vitamin D tablets, muli-vitamins and fish oil tablets to try and up my levels and improve my health. Besides that all my other results came back good. Liver function, kidney function, calcium levels, iron levels, cholesterol, white cell count are all good. The only concern was the vitamin D.
I questioned her whether my other symptoms besides fatigue could be because of vitamin d deficiency, eg. nausea, headaches, swollen glands and she kind of danced around that question. She said she ‘supposed so’ but she was more concerned about my vitamin D. She then started asking me if I was depressed (I don’t think I am) and if maybe that was making me tired.
So, my question is.. is it possible that it is just vitamin D deficiency that is making me so fatigued? Or could it be that I did have glandular fever recently and it is contributing? Once the virus leaves your system but the antibodies are still present, can you still suffer fatigue?
Should I take these tablets for the next two months like she advised and see what happens or should I see another doctor? I am rarely sick so I have no idea what to do.
