Would i be able to raise baby sunfish in a 10 gallon tank?

Question by KDHeine: Would i be able to raise baby sunfish in a 10 gallon tank?
For my biology project, i am wanting to take baby sunfish (or pumpkinseed fish approx: 2-3″ long max) from our school pond ( this is allowed and legal) and raise them in a 10 gallon filtered/heated tank. They are living in pretty cold water conditions in their natural environment as it is now, so im not sure the heater is necessary, but anyway, i would only be keeping them for about 5 months, and then releasing them. We want to see if we can mimic their habitat and what not, and see if they will be able to thrive the environment we create. Would 5 or 6 two inch baby sunfish be ok in a 10 gallon tank for around 5 months? any tips on what you would do? or think i should do? i have kept freshwater fish for years, just nothing from the wild. Thanks in advance for all your help….

will running tap water through my aquarium filter screw it up?

I wanna test it with everything in it and run it for a while. Will this screw it up?

Hi Joey;

Depends on what you mean. I will explain none the less.

1.) It will not damage the filter mechanism, the pump, blades etc. You can run it in tap water indefinitely and it will be fine.

2.) Tap water (depending on where you live) is likely to destroy any bacterial colonies that are in your filter medium, reducing your filter’s ability to effectively neutralize dangerous chemicals in your aquarium water.

3.) If run in tap water, it is usually a good idea to throw away filter media and replace with new media that has not been contaminated by tap water chemicals before re-introduction into your aquarium.

4.) If your bacterial colonies do die, or get replaced by new filter media, supplemental bacterial solution is available at your local pet store that help to quickly rebuild colonies in your filters.

Hope this answers your question…

Good Luck…
