is the active carbon/charcoal in aquarium filters safe to use as drinking water filter?

so for my science project, i have to build a water filtration system. That being said i decided to build one using an active carbon filter. What i was wondering was, are the active carbon filter used in fish tanks safe to use?

Sand Tiger Sharks New England Aquarium

Each year the divers at the New England Aquarium perform a census of the animals in the Giant Ocean Tank. This video of the Aquarium’s three sand tiger sharks was taken during the December 2008 census. You will see the smallest sand tiger shark has a superficial mark on its tail. That is from bumping into the coral reef in the exhibit. Find out more about the animals on the Giant Ocean Tank blog: www.neaq.org

Is my 30 gallon freshwater tank overstocked?

I have a 30 gallon freshwater aquarium that is fully cycled w/ perfect water parameters stocked w/ the following:

12 neon tetras
4 adult dwarf sunburst platys (1 male 3 female)
1 baby dwarf sunburst platy (survived by hiding in the rocks :)
8 peppered cory cats
4 gouramis (2 blue, 2 gold)

Seems like a lot, but the fish seem pretty happy. About 1/4 of the tank is artificial plants, which the gourami’s tend to hide in. The corys all have their own hiding places, the platys kind of meander about, and the tetras school themselves usually in the back of the tank by some plants as well.

The water parameters are perfect even w/ this load; I’m not sure if i’m overloading or if I have room for more.

Quite honestly, I want to add 1 “big” fish, but don’t think there is really one I could add that would be happy in there by itself and not eat anyone.

My filtration is an Eheim 2213 canister filter that’s working pretty wonderfully.

The tank is also fully cycled.

Thoughts?
