Algae in Tropical Fish Aquarium.?

I’ve had a fish aquarium for a year or so now, but I’ve had trouble keeping my fish alive for more than a few months. Is this just the way fish are? They are smaller tropical fish that I bought at a local PetSmart. I’ve also had a problem with algae growing in the bottom of the tank, on top of the rocks. How can I fix this? I’ve started feeding them less, thinking that they weren’t eating all there food and the uneaten food was causing the algae. But it is still there. So how much, and how often should I feed them? I also notice one fish stays beside the heater a lot, is he just naturally cold or is the water cold… so what temperature should the water be?
Basically any tips you have to keep the tank clean and prolong the life of the fish would be greatly appreciated! :) THANKS!
-The tank is 10 gallons.
-I’m not sure what the current temperature is. There is a heater for the tank. If i had to take a guess it feels around 77-81
-There are 4 tetra’s and 2 mickey house platy’s. All are smaller than 1 inch.
-There are rocks, three fake plants, and a small house for them to hide in.
-I’m not sure about the filter.
-There is not a lot of sun around it. There is a light for the tank, it is on around 10 hours a day I think.
-We change the water once every month/month and a half. 1/3 of the water is taken out and replaced with dechlorinated water. The temperature is not adjusted completely with the tank water, but it is very close.

I changed the water of my freshwater aquarium yesterday and I added the water safer and PH and amonia, yesterday was perfect but today the water is almost white

What kind of cool fish can I put into a 30 gallon aquarium?

I know tetras, gouramis, mollies, angelfish, and catfish are good choices.

10 G Freshwater Aquarium looks yellow?

i had my tank for a month. before i added my fish i cleaned a peice of wood from the store and some balck and whote gavel. after i added some live plants with my fish. it was cloudy at first then it just became a ugly yellow. i noticed some plants were dieing and being eaten so took out the dead plants and did a very good wtaer change about 60%. the water was clear for awhile then turned yelllow agin. i leave some flourencent lights on for about 9 hours a day, i use all the right amounts of products for my water and plants. my fish seem to be happy. wuts wrong.

i do notice some white build up around the top of my tanks and around the top of my filter. this is my water it leaves white spots o my dishes.

Landscaping?

Background: We moved in our current house a year ago when I was about 7 months pregnant with our second child. Obviously not in the mood to do a lot of work. The backyard has a lot of just chaotic, viney planets and poison ivy, and this is to be all ripped out this weekend. Our focus currently is on the front.

That link shows a picture of our house, albeit a poor one. It’s from Google StreetView, if you were curious.

Now, we’re getting rid of the rock on the right of the driveway. It’s basically aquarium rock. It’s going to be replaced with grass and a sidewalk leading to our backyard. The hedge will also be removed.

It’s hard to see, but currently we have 5 box woods lining one side of our steps. The other is just rock and mulch. And those bushes under the window? Gone.

We want to brighten up the exterior, but right now it also needs to be fairly low-maintenance.
We’re not opposed to doing the work ourselves. We don’t necessarily need a landscaper to do the hard work. We need some inspiration and guidance here. We want it to look good instead of tacky, which is what I fear what it would turn out to be. I’ve roamed the local nurseries and have found some plants that may look good, but I am not really confident in myself or the 16 year old employee.

We have a budget of around $300. I’ve been looking around at local landscapers, but it’s hard to determine if this is even possible.

Does anyone have any insight?

We’ve checked out what seems like hundreds of landscaping books and websites, but nothing really screams out to us as possible. We live in Kansas, so in the summer it can easily reach 100 degrees and in the winter it can reach well below zero with ice and snow.
