*I am asking this question for a friend who is in deep distress, so please don’t point fingers at me!
I only want serious answers, preferable from people who are experienced in fish. I will ignore mean/rude/uncaring answers, and report abuse. This is a situation I am very worried about.*
Two days ago my friend’s fantail was swimming around, looking healthy, everything normal. When my friend went away for a moment, however, the fantail’s tail fins got stuck in the filter intake tube. My friend told me that the fantail looked like it was desperately trying to free himself, and he was breathing very heavily in the process. The fantail was stuck for around 10 seconds. My friend freed him by putting a net in between, and he slipped out. He swam around again like normal, like it never even happened.
The next day, my friend told me he saw a tiny spot of red on one of the fantail’s tail fins. It was identical to a hyphen ( – ). The fantail swam around like normal and didn’t seem to be bothered by it. My friend initially thought it was the beginning of a septicemia infection.
Later that day, my friend told me he couldn’t see the red mark anymore. The fantail got stuck in the filter again (for 1 whole minute this time), but my friend used the net to free him again. The fantail was acting like normal after that. All seemed to go well…
Today, this morning my friend told me when he got up, the fantail was lying on the gravel. He didn’t respond to my friend’s finger movements (which usually gets his attention otherwise). The fantail’s eyes also became jerky and shifted up and down abnormally. He was still lying on the gravel when my friend had to leave for school.
When my friend came home, the fantail was lying on the gravel again, not moving at all and breathing slowly. My friend said his mom told him that the fantail was acting like that occasionally during the school day as well. After an hour, the fantails fins were clamped and he began to float. He also got stuck in the filter again today, only for 4 seconds and freed by the same method.
If this confuses you, know that the fantail only laid on the gravel for periods of time, not all the time.
The fantail swims around awkwardly. My friend also thinks he has developed dropsy because his scales are sticking out a bit and its stomach has became larger (you can only notice this if you look in the tank from the top), although he doesn’t know for sure and no meds have been given yet.
Other things:
*The Fantail lives alone in a 10 gallon tank with 3 plastic/silk plants, 10 lb of gravel, and a background. Like me, this is only a TEMPORARY setup, not a permanent one. He knows that 10 gallons is not big enough for a fantail, but he is going to get a 20 gallon for him once he gets bigger (right now he is 2 inches long head to fin).
*The filter is a Tetra Whisper PF10 Power Filter.
*Each day ever since the fish got stuck for the first time my friend put in a teaspoon of aquarium salt.
*Since this happened, my friend has done 2 15% water changes and put in 2 caps of Seachem’s Stability.
*The owner of the fantail is “Aquarium guy”
*Water parameters as of now:
pH: 6.5
Ammonia: 0.5
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0
Any help you can give is deeply appreciated, as long as it is actually HELPFUL, if you know what I mean. Kind words would be comforting as well.
I’ll be here for additional details.
Pet stores don’t really know about the animals they are selling.
….I know that from experience.
Salt can be used to help regenerate slime coat in freshwater fish. If you work at a pet store you should know that.
