Should I get my son fish for his birthday?

He is turning 4, and he really wants fish. He has always loved them. I just don’t think that I want the responsibility. How difficult/expensive is it to maintain fish.? He likes clownfish (Nemo) the best, but he likes other types too. He likes Bettas, and I think I could handle one of those, but my son would lose interest with just one fish? What is it like to have just a Betta? Does anyone have any information about setting up a 10 gallon or so aquarium? (cost, tips…) Around what age can kids start helping to take care of fish? Thanks.

Seahorses… Good pets? What setup would be best?

My wife and I are planning on getting seahorses. I’ve personally had a freshwater aquarium for some time, and think I’m ready to take on saltwater (I know it’s much more difficult to maintain). So, are they good pets? Moreover, what OTHER fish go well with them? I know pipefish, and seadragons (I’d love one of those), but as for ‘fish’ fish, what would work?

The tank we’d be using is a HUGE corner tank (60 some gallons). What plants would work best? Rock, corals, anemones… Would invertebrates be destructive in this setup? A lot of questions, but, we just don’t know! Any feedback would be great, and thanks again.

Saltwater Aquarium: Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish?

Sorry that i keep asking these questions so much, but i keep getting different answers from everyone, and from my LFS. i have a FOWLR tank set up with almost thirty pounds of live rock, most of the tank is wide open, just half the bottom is covered with many available hiding places. So far i have a Blue Hippo Tang who is about 1″ or maybe a little over. I want to get a seahorse, he is adult size, and i really want a fuzzy dwarf lionfish he is about 2 inches or 2 1/2 AT MOST. i know they can extend their jaws and eat almost anything, but i will be feeding sinking pellets, live brine shrimp, frozen krill, freeze dried shrimp brine, and veggies once daily or two if needed. Will i be able to keep a fuzzy dwarf lionfish? What are the chances of him eating my fish if he even tries when i turn the aquarium light off at night since they are nocturnal? the books i read said that it can be kept in a community tank or its own species tank with one male and several females…please tell me if you HAVE or HAD experience with keep dwarfs in a community tank, not if you have only read or heard, i want to hear it from an experienced keeper please

Do angel fish normally spend so much time next to the aquarium walls?

Yesterday I purchased 2 small and young angel fish- one black, one white. They are in a comfortable 55 gallon tank along with a ton of white clouds, 2 clown loaches and 2 plecos.
They like to spend an awful lot of time near the glass, not necessarily rammed up again the glass, but just within 2 or 3 inches.

I read in a book that sometimes, when angels are scared, they will crash into the side of the aquarium in an attempt to kill or injure themselves.

Are my fish suicidal? Or are they just obsessed with their appearance…?

Fresh water aquarium water issues……..can I use spring water?

I moved to a new town and set up my long successful freshwater aquarium with tetra fish. I had a very hard time getting the water chemicals to balance and they pet shop finally told me that the water where I live is really not workable for aquariums because of the chemicals. All of the fish died, despite my experienced efforts.

We have a goldfish that we just use spring water for in a bowl and he is nearly 5 years old! So, I know spring water is ok for that type of fish.

Does anyone know that if I start with spring water and work from there, would it be ok for tetras? Would I even need chemicals??
