Hi, I’m setting up a tank going by the information on http://www.firsttankguide.net/

I’m confused about the filters though. He makes it sound like I don’t really need a mechanical filter…and that if I follow his guide there will be bacteria acting as a biological filter. This appeals to me because it sounds like lower maintenance and costs for replacement filters.

Am I reading this right? Do I really not need a mechanical filter?

It’s going to be a small 10 gallon tank with a couple of tropical fish. I’m not sure which ones yet. Maybe a single African Cichlid at first.
