Aquarium Accessories to Enhance the Appearance of Your Fish’s Habitat

Having an aquarium can be much more than just a place to put the fish. Using the right aquarium accessories, you can turn the aquarium into a fine piece of decoration in the house. With the proper accessories, you can add to your fish’s habitat and dress up the overall appearance.

When selecting aquarium accessories, you first want to identify the type of water and the type of fish you have. There are some accessories that will not hold up in salt water like they can in freshwater. Also, some accessories are not good for various types of fish.

For a salt water aquarium, coral can be a great addition because of the elegance it adds. It will fill the aquarium up nicely and make it look less dull. There are several different kinds of coral to choose from giving you options to decorate the aquarium.

Rocks are another accessory that can suit an aquarium perfectly. There is a plethora of different sizes, styles, and colors of rocks to choose from. This way you can match the rocks with the scenery you have already added. Some options include rainbow rocks, lace rocks, and carved lava.

If you have a freshwater aquarium, there are just as many options to choose from to spice up the tank. As with saltwater, you can opt to place all different kinds of rocks with no problems. An accessory that is only suitable for freshwater is driftwood. Driftwood comes from swamplands and sinks naturally to the bottom of the tank. This will keep it from tangling up and injuring the fish.

Aside from adding style to your aquarium, you also need maintenance aquarium accessories like pumps and filters. These will help keep the tank free from toxic waste that could harm your fish.

Lastly, you will need additives for the water. Additives will allow you to keep the fish healthy and free of any kind of harm. For a saltwater aquarium, you can use a reef solution to enhance the lifestyle or your fish. For freshwater aquariums, there is a solution that can be used to stimulate the appetite of the fish.

Aquarium accessories are crucial to enhancing the appearance of the tank and the overall lifestyle of the fish. Everything from coral to rocks to pumps and filters should be considered when looking for accessories. While decorating the tank adds to the appearance, pumps and filters can keep fish healthy and lively.

Fifty Five Gallon Fresh Water Aquarium

A fifty five gallon freshwater aquarium is a good choice when purchasing a new tank, if nothing else, simply because of its size. These tanks are large enough to accommodative a variety of fish, but still small enough to keep in tight spaces in the home or office. Your local retailer can assist you with specifics in purchasing, but here are some suggestions for the basics. Purchase an acrylic tank, because they are lighter in weight and easier to care for than glass aquariums. Also the visibility is better in an acrylic tank. If you don’t already have a stand or a suitable replacement, keep in mind that you will need to purchase one.  You will need a heater for temperature control, and a thermometer for checking the water temperature. It will take approximately five bags of rock or other substrate to line the bottom of the tank. Choose a bright color to add some interest to the aquarium.

In addition, you will need to purchase a filter for the tank. Filters can be complicated. Do a lot a research to find out what type of filter is suggested for the fish that you choose. There are filters that go beneath the substrate in the bottom of the tank, as well as filters that attach to the side of the aquarium. They also vary greatly in price. It is not necessary to buy the most expensive filter when setting up a basic freshwater aquarium.

The aquarium will also need lighting. Again, based on personal preference you can keep it simple or get very technical. Most fish will respond nicely to a basic light that is simply turned on for a few hours each day. An aquarium should contain some form of plants for added interest. The plants serve a place for the fish to seek refuge and feel safe. There are many varieties of freshwater plants that would work nicely in a fifty five gallon aquarium. Just be sure to purchase an aquatic specific species. If you don’t want the hassle of live plants, plastic is always an option. They have come along way with synthetic plants. In most cases the fish may not even notice the difference, unless of course they try to eat them.

Once your tank is established and you are ready to add fish, choose your fish carefully. Start with hardy fish, such as live bearers, gouramis, barbs, and danios. These fish are hardy enough to handle higher nitrate levels in the tank. Allow about thirty days for these fish to become acclimated to the tank, before adding any new fish. It usually takes about thirty days for the symptoms of ich or other fish illnesses to show up. It is important to make sure that all existing fish are healthy before adding any new species. The transportation of new fish itself is stressful enough, without having to add disease to the situation. When purchasing fish, it is important to remember that a fifty five gallon aquarium can handle about fifteen to twenty small fish total. This will allow plenty of growth room for the fish.

Sand Substrate, please help..!?

I’ve a 85 gallon tank with angels(2), silver dollar(2) and parrots(4) since a month. It has gravel as the substrate, i really don’t like it. I want to change it to the sand, can i use Sieved fine construction sand? Is sand better than a gravel substrate? My aquarium has only 2 small plants (i can remove them too). All i need is a good looking aquarium with sand substrate, before changing the substrate i wanted to know everything about it so that i don’t stress my fish, as of now my tank just has a mechanical internal bio foam filter, I’m planning to buy an external canister filter soon (may be in a fortnight). I’ve seen in some websites( http://www.skepticalaquarist.com/docs/substrate/gravel.shtml ) that sand is the best substrate, is it so? If i use sand how do i clean it (taking it outta the tank and cleaning it is such a pain)? Can i use the sieved fine construction sand (which is bought from the rivers here in India, not processed). Can i clean the poop from the sand by siphoning it? and how often do i need to siphon the sand? However i change 70% of water every week now. The pet stores here in India doesn’t sell any sand in specific, the easiest way for me the sieved construction sand (dad into construction profession, so can get some sand sieved at the construction site easily :P )
Please give me a clear picture of the SAND and how to change from GRAVEL TO SAND and how to clean the SAND and the intervals too and all the SAND AQUARIUM maintenance tips. Thank You.
What if i want to keep some plants too in it. Suggest me about the sand depth and the lighting too.
