aquarium algae.?

it is about my 70 gallon. im just starting to get conscious about its algaes. i mean, i could take it but i guess my plants are affected in a way, perhaps.
my question is: will injecting CO2 help reduce (or eventually extinguish) the algae? the vallis have lots of them in their leaves, the aquarium glass also develops those green dots which i have to smudge off.
the tank receives about an hour of direct sunlight, though in parts only. it is beside the window. also, a fluorescent 20 W is on in, duration is irregular.

the substrate: i employ garden soil, topped with gravel. which i suppose is the “crushed coral” type.

no ferts

no co2 injection

with driftwoods

inhabitants: 2 bolivian rams, 5 black tetras, 3 neons, 1 platy, 1 pleco, 2 z.danios. and a few snails too, which somehow i see feeding on the algae.

i dont wanna use algae chemicals or something. so i wonder if the addional CO2 would help. please let me know, at least in this case. thanks a lot.

Allergic to Your fish tank?

Does anyone have any experience being allergic to a freshwater fish tank? I have always had allergies, i’ve blamed, dust, mold, my cats etc. But it occurred to me the other day that it is my fish tanks. I have a 55 gal, a 29 and two 20 gallons. in at least two of the tanks My arm will break out in a rash and itch if I leave it in there a while (while cleaning it). it has nothing to do with the plants in them because I have gotten this rash for years and just started keeping planted aquariums this year. When I do aquarium maintenance I will experience sneezing, itchy throat, watery eyes etc. I currently take zyrtec and also have tried benadryl. The rash fades very quickly, but the sneezing and runny nose last longer.
Has anyone ever consulted a doctor about this? What was the allergen? Algae? a chemical? I am not allergic to shellfish and keep a wide variety of fish so I am thinking it is not the fish, but something growing in the water. How can I figure this out?

can a freshwater aquarium be left unattended for a month with an automatic feeder, heater and timed lighting?

im a college student and wanted to get a fish tank. I’m just thinking what will happen to it during christmas break
also, im also concerned with the danger of it. Electrical surges, shortages…

Planted Aquarium Substrate?

I am current running a 55 gallon tropical fish community tank with around 22 fish in it. I have added around 12 big plants to the mix and am using a regular substrate of white fish gravel which is what you normally see in a regular fish tank but is it ok to have plants in that kind of substrate? To be honest they are green and I think growing. If possible I would like not to change the substrate but if necessary I will.

—2 inches of gravel.
