10 PTS! Can a regular desk lamp Hurt my Gold fish’s’ eyes/ cause stress?
by Aquaboy on Thursday, June 3rd, 2010 | 3 Comments
I am using a regular lamp w/ a 65 watt light bulb shinging down on my 60 gallon aquarium. I intend to purchase an aquarium lighting system in the near future, but I just want to ensure that using a lamp on the top of the glass cover will not cause any harm. Thankyou and I DO RATE BEST ANSWER FOR THE 10 POINTS!
I am primarly concerned for their eyes. Specifically if they are sensitive to any particular type of light.

in a tank that big i dont think it would harm them or any other fish in any way. and goldfish dont have very good eyesight so i think you will be just fine
If you have that kind of light shining on them then they might not come out. It will hurt there eyes if it’s on them. Goldfish actually get their color from the sunlight. So it is better to get that aquarium light like now. A normal desk lamp is too bright and is like a tanning bed for them. Also make sure you keep your tank clean so that they don’t get sick.
Your fish will be fine until you are able to get an aquarium light.
Though technically sunlight is perfectly fine for fish. The aquarium lights are largely so WE can see into the tank. Why do you think goldfish are just fine in little glass bowls without heaters, filters and lights?
A lady at the pet store told me that if you don’t have live plants in your tank, then you do not need to have the light on all day. You are fine with the lamp, but you do not really need it. All it will do is cause more algae.
